Sending Wedding Invitations

When to send Wedding invitations?

Trying to decide when to send out your wedding invitations is always tricky. You want to send it out early enough that your guests don’t make other plans on your wedding date, but near enough to the event that there aren't likely to be any unforeseen changes, and your guests won’t have time to forget about it. The ideal time to send that invite will depend on a number of factors, like,
  • - Whether you are holding your wedding in peak wedding season.
  • - Whether you are having a local or destination wedding.
  • - Whether you have a lot of out of town guests.
  • - Whether you have a reserve list if some guests can’t make it.
  • - Whether you want to personalize objects such as place names.
  • - Whether you have sent out save the date cards.
Most guests would expect to receive their wedding invite around eight weeks before the big day. This gives them plenty of notice and time to reply, book a babysitter, buy an outfit, and choose a gift. However, some of the above circumstances will mean that you need to send out invitations sooner.

Sending out the wedding invite for a peak season event

If you are holding a local wedding on a Saturday in late spring or early autumn, you will need to let your guests know early if you don’t want them to commit to attending another wedding. The best way to do this is to stick to the eight week rule for the actual invite itself, but to send out a save the date card at least six months in advance.

Sending out the wedding invite for a destination wedding

If you are expecting guests to travel to your wedding, whether it is in another part of Australia or abroad, you will need to give them plenty of notice so that they can take time off work, plan travel arrangements, and book accommodation. It is usual to send out the official wedding invite and detailed information about the venue and destination around six to eight months before the wedding.

Sending out the wedding invite to out of town guests

The same time scales apply for out of town guests as for a destination wedding. You will need to inform any out of town guests about your wedding plans six to eight months before the wedding so they have time to prepare. If you are holding a local wedding, however, you only need to send save the date cards and some additional information to out of town guests at this stage; you can still send out your official wedding invite eight weeks before the wedding.

Sending out the wedding invite if you have a reserve list

Many couples find they have to cut down their ideal guest list due to financial or venue capacity constraints. This often results in a reserve list of people the couple want to try to invite if some guests can’t make it. If you find you have a long reserve list, it might be a good idea to send your invitations out around three months before the wedding. This will give any guests that can’t come along time to reply, and for you to issue a new wedding invite to your reserve list without them feeling like they were a last minute choice.

Wedding stationery

Wedding Stationery : The difference lies here!

Wedding stationery is more than just an invitation.
When you first think about wedding stationery, your mind will immediately go the wedding invitation itself, but there are many other possible elements of wedding stationery to consider. Most brides want to use a common theme, colour scheme and motif throughout their wedding stationery, so it is worth ordering it all at the same time to get a consistent look. Take a look at the following list and decide which items are necessary and within your wedding budget.

Engagement party invitations

An engagement party is a great way to announce your betrothal, and to kick off preparations for your wedding. If you are very organised, you could co-ordinate your engagement party invitations with the rest of your wedding stationery, but most brides treat this as a separate occasion, and many haven’t even set the wedding date at this point.

Save the date cards

If you are using save the date cards, they can be sent out up to twelve months before the wedding, and should introduce the theme and feel of the wedding to your guests. They can be less formal than the actual invitation, and are often sent in the form of a postcard.

Hen or Bucks party invitations

It may be that your maid of honour and grooms-man take care of the arrangements for the bridal shower, or bucks party, but the invitations should still convey the type of event they are planning to hold. Recently many couples have chosen to celebrate together rather than having separate parties, and a well designed invitation can help to add excitement in the build up to the wedding itself.

Wedding Invitations

A wedding invitation can come in many distinct parts that can be sent together or separately depending on your guests. The ceremony invitation will be sent to all guests attending the formal part of the wedding. There may be two reception invitations if you are having a wedding breakfast as well as an evening reception afterwards. You may choose just to invite some people, such as work colleagues, to the evening reception.

You may also choose to include directions or other enclosures in your wedding invitations. These could include suggestions and contact details for local hotels. If you are including a wedding response card in the envelope with your invitation, remember to put on a stamp for the guest to mail it back to you. Don’t buy stamps to mail out your invitations until you have weighed a complete invitation, you may be surprised how heavy they become.

Wedding program

A wedding program is essential for your ceremony, especially if you have a lot of friends or family involved in the service. It will tell them when they have to do their piece, and will let other guests know who they are. Co-ordinating the wedding program with the rest of your stationery will improve the design flow of your big day.

Seating plan

You will have put a lot of time and effort into getting the seating plan for your reception just right, so you want it displayed in a tasteful and easy to understand format at your reception venue. Ideally it will co-ordinate with the place cards and menus if you are using them.

Place names

Not everybody will find their exact seat from the seating plan, for most people the plan will just tell them which table to head for. Your place names will direct them to the right seat, and so should be printed in a clear font so they are easy to read from a distance.

Menus

Menus on the table are crucial if your guests have a choice regarding what to eat at the wedding reception. Even if they are all eating the same, a menu can be a nice touch to let your guests know what the dishes actually are. It is not always easy to tell the type of meat that is being served if it is covered by a sauce for example. A printed menu also lets vegetarians know what the meat free option is.

Thank you cards

Sending out cards to thank your guests for sharing your special day with you, and for their gifts, are absolutely essential. Most brides choose to use the same design theme as their wedding invitations, to round of the event in a seamless way.

Ordering your wedding stationery

Confirm with your wedding stationery supplier exactly when to order your stationery, but this is usually done four to five months before the wedding. Also check the turnaround time with your supplier, you may want to send the invitations out earlier than they realise. Ask about their payment policy, and if you are ordering many different items of stationery, see if they will arrange a discount.

Wedding Thank you cards

Wedding Thank You Cards

In the excitement of tearing the paper off your wedding presents, it is easy to forget that you will need to write wedding thank you cards for each of the gifts, and that you really have to keep track of who gave you what.

Here we have tried to give you ease by answering some questions which may hit your brains!

Should we send wedding thank you cards for gifts received before the wedding?

  • Our opinion is NO!
Their is a possibility that your guests couldn't attend your wedding due to some reason. It will be better to send the card after the event so you can thank them for being there as well as for the gift.
  • How do we remember which gift is from which guest?

If you have a registry, the store you register with should keep a list of your gifts and the people that purchased them for you, which will make your task much easier. If you haven’t registered try to print off a list of your guests with their addresses shortly after you send out the wedding invitations. You can then use this list to write down gifts as you receive them. If you really don’t know what a particular guest bought you, you can just send a card thanking them for their lovely gift, but that could be awkward if they didn’t actually get you anything.
  • Should we say what we’re doing with gifts of money?

It’s always good to write something specific about your gift. For example if a guest has bought you a picture frame you can say that it will be perfect for displaying your favourite wedding photo. The same applies to monetary gifts, but you should only mention if you are spending it on something positive such as home improvements, a holiday, or some gardening projects. Don’t tell guests if you are using their contributions to pay off your credit card bill for example.
  • When should we send out our wedding thank you cards?

    • General etiquette dictates that you should send out your post wedding thank you cards within a month of returning from honeymoon. Most guests will understand if you leave it a little longer, however, especially if you are moving home or have a busy work schedule. Try to get the cards written within two months while you are still on a post wedding high, otherwise it will be a really difficult task.

Should we send wedding thank you cards to guests that didn’t bring a gift?

Your thank you cards are not just related to your presents, but are also intended to thank your guests for making the effort to attend your wedding. As well as giving their time to share your day, they may have spent money on an outfit, travel, or accommodation. Also their gift may have got lost in the post, or may be that one item you lost the gift tag for. Always send wedding thank you cards to guests that attended your wedding, and say how happy you both were that they could be there.

Top wedding trends

TOP WEDDING TRENDS

Your invitation is your guest’s introduction to your wedding,

so it should set the mood for the big day and create a sense of anticipation. Spend some time looking for a wedding invitation that really reflects the wedding you are planning, and suits your theme or wedding style. If you are stuck for inspiration, here are ten of the latest trends in wedding invite design to give you some ideas:

  1. Mixing patterns

  1. Bold patterns such as stripes, polka dots, oriental flower prints and paisley have been big news in wedding invitations for some time, but the latest trend is to mix two or three of these patterns, in the same colour scheme, for a really eye catching invite.

  1. 3D texture

  1. Adding texture to your invites with fabrics, pressed flowers, twisted wire, or layered card is a fashionable way to create a unique design that will stand out from traditional flat printed cards.

  1. Injecting personality

  1. Handmade cards are increasing in popularity, and couples are using family photos, caricatures, and images of places they have visited to create bespoke designs. As well as cutting costs, handmade cards are more personal and can be tailored slightly for each guest.

  1. Sparkle

  1. Crystals and gemstones are finding their way into every element of wedding design, and wedding invites are no different. A couple of small stick on crystals can lift the design on any printed card, and a popular option is to have a clean and simple white card with an added ribbon belt and rhinestone buckle.

  1. Relaxed wording

  1. Modern couples are moving away from traditional invitation wording, and creating less formal invitations. While it used to be customary for invitations to be issued by the couple’s parents, many couples are choosing to send the invites directly from themselves. Formal phrases such as ‘we request the honour of your presence’ are also being replaced with simpler sentences such as ‘we’d love you to come and celebrate with us’.

  1. Modern monograms

  1. A monogram of the bride’s initials has been a wedding invite staple for many years, but a new trend for sleek logo style monograms, incorporating both sets of initials or even the couple’s names, has created invitations that are cheeky but still formal.

  1. Going green

  1. Eco friendly invitations are gathering popularity as going green becomes the theme for many weddings. Recycled and handmade paper make beautiful bases for invitations, and natural materials such as leaves, twigs and pressed flowers can add colour and texture. You can even e-mail your invites to save paper.

  1. Bold colours

  1. Traditional white may still be used for very formal weddings, but many couples are opting for bold shades to suit their wedding theme or season. Select up to three complementary colours from your wedding palette to make your invite stand out from the crowd. While hot pink and aqua were popular invitation colours until recently, this season sees a shift towards muted shades such as plum or deep red.

  1. Pocket it

  1. The standard envelope has had its day with wedding invitations; these days as much thought goes into the design of the invitation’s wrapping as the card itself. From fabric pouches to coloured clear plastic pockets, these are designed to hold the invitation, a reply card, directions and accommodation details, and gift list information.

  1. E-invites

  1. Tech Savvy couples might prefer to issue a multi-media electronic invite complete with soundtrack, animation, and video, rather than a traditional printed card delivered by post. Others are using social networks to spread the word about their wedding, and provide links to their wedding website.
Trends in wedding invite design

You will probably want to tie in the design of your wedding invitations with the overall scheme of your wedding, and many couples choose coordinating invitations, place names, and thank you cards. Traditional wedding invitations are often being pushed aside to make way for contemporary designs, and here are a few of the latest trends in wedding invitations:

  • .

  • A single flower is proving a popular wedding invitation motif, and this can often inspire the whole theme of the wedding, providing a consistent design element throughout the stationery and decorations.
  • Pocket style invitations, or seal and send invitations are becoming very popular. With this type of invitation the envelope forms a part of the invitation itself, and wraps around other elements of the invitation such as directions, wedding list details, and reply card.
Many couples are rejecting traditional white invitations and using a whole range of other colours. Here are a few of the latest colours, depending on the season of your wedding:

  • Winter wedding invitations often use a strong colour such as onyx black, forest green or plum, combined with silver and white.
Spring wedding invitations tend to incorporate paler hues such as sky blue, leaf green, or magnolia pink.
  • Summer wedding invitations are available in vivid shades of apple green, aqua blue, bright yellow, and sunset orange.
  • Autumn wedding invitations are more muted using rusted orange, deep scarlet and chocolate brown.

If you are choosing traditional white the type of white can make all the difference. Bright white is exactly what it says and is very fresh contemporary look. Ecru is a warmer tone, giving a more traditional and elegant feel to your invitation. White, which is actually usually more of a vanilla colour, is the most popular choice and provides a tasteful middle ground.
